    Day Jobs Suck
"It’s day-job time again in America, and that’s O.K. Artists have always had them — van Gogh the preacher, Pollock the busboy, Henry Darger the janitor — and will again. The trick is to try to make them an energy source, not a chore."

Holland Cotter in the NY Times: The Boom Is Over. Long Live the Art!

Although this article is definitely flawed it certainly does make a few good points even if the van Gogh Pollock mentions are totally lame. (Hello? Theo? Peggy Guggenheim?)
Seems like all that's missing from the 'boys with jobs' reference is a mention of Julian Schnable flipping burgers at Max's Kansas City.

As an artist who has always had to have a day-job with just a few brief exceptions and believes that certain jobs can be a definite source of inspiration, NOT having a day-job and working on one's own projects full-time is much more fulfilling.

Sorry to burst your 'romantic' bubble Mr. Kotter- day jobs suck and most artists do not want to be taking precious time away from their practice just to get the bills paid.

And where are the artists supposed to find these jobs now that all kinds of businesses are laying people off?

Flip Mino HD vs. Kodak Zi6
For fun Mr. Miller and I have been looking at small and inexpensive consumer video cameras. I was thrilled on my birthday when we found a tiny point and shoot for $36.82. It's smaller than a cell phone and fits easily in any pocket. It has only 4 buttons. The box said "Mac compatible," (of course it wasn't) and although the picture is decent enough for the price and it wasn't a problem to convert the picture from an .wmv to an .mov file, after numerous attempts with numerous programs we could not get the audio to convert.
I do love the idea of a $40. camera but come on, it's video not film and I expect to have at least some kind of wild sound and of course I want Mac compatible files. And of course if I have to spend more than $40, then I'll probably have to spend $100, and if I'm going to spend at least 100, I might as well spend a little more and get an HD camera.
I like these new little square cameras and have been trying to decide between the Flip Mino HD and the Kodak Zi6.

Prior to seeing this video I was thinking about getting the Flip, But now I think I might go for the Kodak. When I first saw a picture of the Kodak, it reminded me of an old super-8 camera. I'd like to get my hands on one to see how it feels, but I can only seem to find the Kodak Zi6 online.

"Later he could be seen in the beach parking lot, behind his van, a towel wrapped
around his middle, changing out of his wet summer suit."

I bought myself an xmas gift because I'm guessing this genius Raymond Pettibon towel at Target will sell out pretty fast.

There's also towels by Ed Ruscha, Karen Kilimnik & Julian Schnabel. Target.com

"WOW (Works on Towels): Artist Towel Series 2007 is part of Art Production Fund's WOW (Works on Whatever) project. a unique collection of everyday items designed by artists. ... and then he would have a pollution

I ran into my neighbor Chad at the protest rally and we marched 3 blocks to happy hour at the Eagle and watched the crowd go by while sipping delicious cocktails. I just heard on the news that 12,000 people showed up for the rally and 1.5 mile march across Santa Monica Blvd. to Vermont and then back to Silver Lake. It all seemed pretty good-natured and peaceful. Those cops on horses were protecting those few people protesting the protest. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were there to help too. Someone on their way to my neighbor's 'party before the rally' made a move to steal my No On 8 Yard sign but I busted him and took it the rally myself.

    Prop 8 Rallies & Protests

Tonight's Prop 8 protest rally is a few blocks my house in Silver Lake. I phone banked and rallied to defeat Prop 8 and will attend this event.

I'm a little worried because unlike the City of West Hollywood which contracts with the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department for police protection, Silver Lake is LAPD territory split between the North East and Rampart division. I suspect that there will be a lot of cops. Let's hope that it all stays peaceful.

    Moving the Neutra House
Though I usually do not read the LA Times, when I was checking out the review of LA Opera's Trittico the other day, a link to the slide show that accompanies this article caught my eye:
Neutra's Maxwell house moves to Angelino Heights from Brentwood
The pictures are quite incredible. Wish I could have seen this happen... I'm curious to see the house & will drive around Angelino Heights to look for it.

I'd love to live in a Neutra House. Not sure what I would do with all of my clutter though. Throw it all away or keep it in a studio or a trailer somewhere I suppose.

My Guilty Pleasure is reading Maureen Dowd
I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Maureen Dowd but I find myself checking out her column somewhat regularly.

Her piece about Sara Palin in today's NY Times is a scream. Totally made my morning. Here is the beginning:

"The guilty pleasure I miss most when I’m out slogging on the campaign trail is the chance to sprawl on the chaise and watch a vacuously spunky and generically sassy chick flick.

So imagine my delight, my absolute astonishment, when the hokey chick flick came out on the trail, a Cinderella story so preposterous it’s hard to believe it’s not premiering on Lifetime. Instead of going home and watching “Miss Congeniality” with Sandra Bullock, I get to stay here and watch “Miss Congeniality” with Sarah Palin....."

    Here's the complete piece:

The More Things Change the More they Stay the Same...
My favorite quote from East Village Gutter Punk Suvy: “my parents are metal heads and they hate me.”

Kind of reminds me of a couple of old dead friends from the 80's....

So funny to hear that the word "yuppie" is alive and well in a neighborhood that's been gentrified since before most of these kids were even born....
